Inspired by a forgotten woman from a timeless epic, Urmila rekindles questions of love, devotion and desire in contemporary India.
When the talented and passionate Urmila Karmarkar marries into a politically connected family in suburban Mumbai, little does she realize her husband is living in the shadow of another. After a family altercation that cannot heal, Urmila is left heartbroken when her husband feels compelled to follow his brother and sister-in-lawn to Dubai. Fuelled by this rejection, Urmila battles to keep her dreams of love alive, but they take on a most unexpected direction.

The poems in this collection use the central metaphor of turmeric (‘antiseptic, remedial, bitter // underplayed, litmus-like’) to examine a unique coming of age narrative. From the claustrophobia of growing into woman to the elation of breaking into love or the more philosophical meditations on the contrary, conflicting roles we inhabit, these poems colour the page as true as turmeric. The poems are intensely felt and yet have something of a witness-speaker:
I wait there in the stands
with bated breath and eager eyes watching myself sprint towards the finish, a long way off.
Curated by the late P. Lal of Writers Workshop, this limited-edition book is gold-embossed, hand-stitched and hand-bound by Tulamiah Mohiuddin, and features a cover made from handloom sarees.
